Why most small business websites underperform

Usually it is not the design. It is that the site was built without deciding who it was for, so it says a little about everything and nothing convincingly. Visitors cannot tell within five seconds what you do, where you are, or why you rather than the shop down the road.

The second problem is maintenance. A site assembled from a dozen plugins works on launch day and degrades quietly for two years until nobody wants to touch it.

How we approach it instead

  • One clear audience, named out loud before design starts
  • Copy written around what your customers actually search for
  • A lean WordPress build — no plugin pile-up, nothing you did not ask for
  • Elementor set up so you can make your own edits without breaking anything

What’s Included

What a web design project covers

Every item below is part of the base project. No tiers, no modules that turn out to be essential.

Discovery & direction

A working session on your business, your customers, and the competition, ending in a written brief we both sign off.

Sitemap & wireframes

Structure agreed before visuals, so we are arguing about the right things at the cheap stage.

Visual design

Type, colour, and layout built for your business, with desktop and mobile designed together rather than one squeezed from the other.

WordPress build

Built in Elementor and kept lean, tested across browsers and real phones before anything goes live.

On-page SEO setup

Page titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, schema, sitemap, and image alt text, done at build time rather than bolted on later.

Domain & hosting setup

Domain, DNS, SSL, and email routing configured and handed over in your name, tested on staging first.

Forms that reach you

Contact and inquiry forms wired to your inbox, with spam filtering that actually holds.

Handover walkthrough

A recorded session showing you how to edit your own pages, plus written notes to come back to.

Thirty days of support

Anything that breaks or reads wrong in the first month after launch, we fix at no charge.

Questions

Web design questions

How much does web design cost for a small business?

Web design projects start at $500, and most small business sites land between $500 and $3,500. Page count and how ready your copy and photos are drive the difference. You get a fixed written quote before any work starts.

You do not have to. Most clients send us rough notes about what they do and we shape it into page copy. If you would rather write it yourself, we will give you a structure to write into so nothing important gets missed.

We design around what you have and tell you honestly where a photo is doing real work. For local businesses, decent phone photos of the actual place usually beat stock imagery.

Yes, and that is why we build in WordPress with Elementor. Your handover walkthrough covers changing text, swapping photos, and updating hours. If you would rather not touch it, small edits are part of the care plans.

Often. We audit what you have first and tell you whether a rebuild is worth it or whether a handful of fixes to structure, speed, and copy would get you most of the way there.

Three rounds, included rather than sold as an add-on. In practice most projects use two. Bigger changes of direction after sign-off become a scope conversation, and we will say so before doing the work.
